Epiphan Pearl Live Production Video Mixer
The Epiphan Pearl is a portable live production video mixer that lets you capture, switch, stream, and record video anytime, anywhere. With advanced automatic channel creation and a front panel touchscreen, setup is very simple. Simply plug in power and one or two sources to see your captured stream on the touchscreen. Connect to a network and start streaming right away.
The Pearl allows you to capture four HD sources at the same time via SDI, HDMI, and VGA inputs on the rear. You can also use optional adapter cables to capture from DVI and component sources. Audio is captured embedded in the SDI and HDMI sources and can also be captured independently via onboard stereo TRS jacks. The Pearl features a 1TB HDD, which stores approximately 300 hours of HD recordings.
With the Pearl you can record your videos while simultaneously outputting up to four 1080p streams at 30 fps, or two 1080p streams at 60 fps. You can also output a single Ultra HD 4K (3840 x 2160) stream at lower frame rates.
The multi-featured front panel touchscreen display can be used for live switching, confidence monitoring, quick configuration, system information, recording control, and streaming control. It can also display a VU meter with quasi-peak metering. In addition to the touchscreen display, two Mini DisplayPort connectors are also available for local video output with audio for confidence monitoring.
Since the Pearl's original release, Epiphan has continuously enhanced it via firmware upgrades. The quasi-peak metering feature mentioned above, for example, was added to the Pearl via such an enhancement. Accordingly, more enhancements may additionally be made in the future.
- Live Event Streaming
Capture Four HD Sources at Once
With built-in support for 3G/HD/SD-SDI, HDMI, and VGA, as well as DVI and component via optional adapter cables, Pearl can capture just about any video source you have. Audio capture is supported over HDMI, SDI, and through stereo TRS audio jacks.
Auto or Custom-Configure
Let Pearl set everything for you automatically, or take advantage of the web UI to configure bit rate, frame-size, layouts, overlays, and more.
Stream to Your Viewers
Stream to local viewers using browsers or media players, or use Pearl's CDN integration to share with a large audience. You can even stream to Smart TVs and set-top boxes. Have as many as four different 1080p streams at 30 fps all from one device.
- Quality Monitoring
Pearl's touchscreen lets you scroll through your channels (also known as video streams) to monitor what's being captured, streamed, and recorded by each.
Use the front-mounted 3.5mm mini audio jack to plug in speakers or headphones for audio monitoring. The touchscreen also displays a VU meter to guide decisions regarding audio levels.
Not only does Pearl's screen let you see what's being streamed, you can use it to load saved configuration settings, control recording, and switch video layouts in a stream with the touch of a finger.
- Create Engaging Video Streams
Arrange Content into Layouts
Use the web UI to arrange your sources into fully configurable layouts. Add pictures, even transparent PNG files as backgrounds, logos, or overlays. Optionally add date and time stamping or other text to the layouts.
Switch Video Sources Live
Use Pearl's touchscreen and video mixer capability to preview and change the content in your video stream. Pick from any of the pre-defined layouts you created to keep your audience engaged and show them exactly what is relevant.
Record Captured Streams
Record an HD copy of your captured video stream, as well as the individual sources, so you'll always have what's needed for professional post-processing.
- Quick Configurations
Save Your Configuration
Pearl lets you save your current configuration as a preset you can recall later. Save network settings, channel setup and layouts, even streaming settings.
Apply Presets Later
Pre-create presets for all the situations in which you'll do video capture, streaming, and recording with Pearl. Use the touchscreen or web UI to load a saved configuration when you arrive on location or between events.
- Multiple Stream Options
Stream Locally or to Set-Top Boxes
Use unicast or multicast to stream locally to up to 50 viewers. Pearl supports a variety of live streaming formats to stream video to media players and web browsers using industry standard streaming formats, including HTTP, FLV, ASF, MJPEG, and HLS. It also provides UPnP and SAP sharing to stream to Smart TVs and set-top boxes.
Stream to CDNs
Publish your live video stream to a large audience using an enterprise streaming server or CDN using RTMP and RTSP. Want to use two CDNs or stream to both a CDN and an enterprise server? No problem, duplicate the channel and publish the same stream to both places simultaneously.
- HD Video Quality
H.264, MPEG-4, or MJPEG Encoding
For maximum compatibility with video players, Pearl's default video codec is H.264, backed with hardware-accelerated encoding. You can also choose from MPEG-4 or M-JPEG.
Fully Synchronized Sound to Video
Using incoming signals over the HDMI, SDI, or TRS ports, Pearl embeds encoded sound into your video stream. Use the default AAC audio at 320 kb/s, or select from AAC, MP3, or PCM audio with stereo or mono, with bit rates from 32 to 320 kb/s, and sampling at 22 to 48 kHz.
- Maximize Value with Video Recording
Record with or without Streaming
Each channel has recording control independent from streaming control – do one or both simultaneously, your choice. Pearl also has configurable video recorders that group multiple streams together for synchronized recording.
Play Files Anywhere
Pearl records in MOV, AVI, or MPEG-TS format. You can configure how large or how long the files are before a new file starts, and you can configure the filename prefix.
Recordings Remain Safe
With 1TB of storage, Pearl can hold almost 300 hours of HD recordings. You can also configure automatic file transfer to a local USB drive or to a network drive using SFTP, FTP, RSYNC, SCP, or CIFS.
- Work with What You Have
Control Pearl Remotely
Pearl has a comprehensive remote command set available over HTTP and RS-232 so you can configure and control nearly every aspect remotely.
Multiple Control Options
You can control Pearl from your desk, on the go, or sitting in front of Pearl. Perform the initial configuration through the web UI, but once that's complete you can use the touchscreen for quick configuration and live video switching, the tablet web UI for status and recording control, the full web UI, or a custom third-party app made using Epiphan APIs.
